Ronaldo says Spanish league is best

Wednesday, December 28, 2011

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo prefers Spain's La Liga over the English Premier League because he says it allows individual players to shine.

Ronaldo, who played for Manchester United for six years before joining Real Madrid, said he "learned the elementary and basic rules of football, especially discipline" while in England. But he said La Liga was the best league in the world because it "relies on players' skills and techniques."

Ronaldo spoke on Wednesday at the Dubai International Sports Conference.
Ronaldo is the Spanish league's top scorer this year and says he has no intention of leaving Spain. While insisting he could adapt to any league, Ronald said he wants to stay at Real Madrid, adding "frankly I'm just enjoying the moment."

Premier League top performers

Sunday, December 25, 2011

Some Premier League players have started as they mean to carry on. Top of their particular class at the half-way stage of the season are:

Arsenal: Robin van Persie

Robin Van Persie

It really couldn't be anyone else. Whether or not Robin van Persie is the best player in the Premier League - and even if Arsenal's trophy drought continues, he should be in contention for the individual honours - he must rank as the most important. By averaging a goal a game, many of them wondrous, in a side that was struggling, the Dutchman has transformed Arsenal's season; indeed, he may have done it in an afternoon with his hat-trick at Stamford Bridge. One who is so much more than simply a scorer has developed into the Premier League's most feared forward.

Football funnies

Thursday, December 22, 2011

After everything quieted down this weekend, SuperSport.com asked its readers to share their football jokes on Facebook. These were some of the funniest and corniest replies:

Fulham 0-5 Manchester United: Impressive Rooney and Berbatov strikes cap great night for United

Red Devils run out dominant winners as fine goals from Rooney and Berbatov add gloss to a fine performance with United finding itself three up at halftime.

LONDON - Manchester United ran out a dominant winner with a 5-0 win in the Premier League away to Fulham, with goals from Danny Welbeck, Nani, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov capping a fine display.

United took a 3-0 lead to halftime thanks to and early goal from Welbeck followed by a header from Nani and a deflected shot from Giggs, but really turned on the style with the final two goals as Rooney and Berbatov finished with aplomb.
Elsewhere, Wayne Rooney astonishingly became the youngest ever player in the Premier League to make 300 appearances at the age of 26 years and 58 days, eclipsing Gareth Barry's record of 26 years and 247 days set in 2007.

Fulham was unchanged from its 2-0 victory over Bolton on Saturday with Martin Jol keeping his faith in Andrew Johnson as the lone striker up front.

United was almost forced into an early change when Phil Jones, deployed at right back, challenged with Clint Dempsey in the air and took a knock to the head. He was off the pitch for some time before he eventually re-joined the action, and almost as soon as he did the away side was in the lead.

Patrice Evra fed the ball to Nani on the halfway line, and the Portuguese winger was allowed to run unchallenged to the byline before sending in a pass to an unmarked Danny Welbeck to slot home.
Fulham almost got back level after 20 minutes as Bryan Ruiz played a neat one-two with Dempsey on the edge of the area before bearing down on goal, only to be thwarted by a fantastic last-ditch tackle from Phil Jones who sent the ball out for a corner.

It was to be the young defender’s last action of the match as he was substituted straight afterwards, though it wasn’t clear whether this was due to the block on Ruiz or if he was still suffering the effects of the clash with Dempsey earlier in the game.

It didn’t seem to phase United, which brought on Ashley Young in his place, and doubled the lead not long after.

A series of corners came United’s way, and the club employed a short corner routine, with the final one resulting in a goal for Nani, who glanced a fantastically whipped ball from Ryan Giggs into the far corner.

United was extremely dominant, and it began to tell as Nani and Valencia were combining fantastically down the right wing, and it was this pairing that set up the third goal for United before halftime.
After Valencia intercepted a cross-field pass, United broke with speed and Nani found Giggs on the edge of the box where he attempted to slot home, with Senderos sending his shot looping in over the top of the unfortunate Stockdale.

The home side left the field to a chorus of boos from the fans, and it would take something very special to come back from such a heavy deficit against the reigning champion.
Fulham actually started the second half quite brightly, forcing three good efforts in the opening 10 minutes.

Anders Lindegaard was forced into his first real stop of the match as he got down well to prevent a header from Dempsey creeping over the line, and a minute later Moussa Dembele went close. John Arne Riise then saw a free kick fade just wide after Danny Murphy’s lay off.

Fulham was undoubtedly coming into the game, but faced a good blockade in the United defense which stayed strong until the end.

In the final few minutes, Wayne Rooney capped his landmark performance with a fine goal, as he was left in too much space and drove a fantastic effort in off the post that left Stockdale with no chance.
Minutes later, substitute Dimitar Berbatov made it five, back-heeling the ball into the far corner after a good break and cross from Valencia.

Hiddink eyes return to Russia with Anzhi

Dutch coaching legend Guus Hiddink is set to make his return to Russia as either the technical director or consultant of the league's big spenders Anzhi Makhachkala, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

Hiddink is revered in Russia as the manager who led the national squad to their best performance in decades when they took their attacking football to the semi-finals of the Euro 2008 championship.

He most recently coached Turkey and was dismissed from his post in November after they fell to Croatia in the Euro 2012 qualifying play-offs.

Hiddink's agent Kees van Nieuwenhuizen said on Wednesday that the Dutchman was considering six different coaching offers and would not announce his decision until next month.

But Moscow's respected Sovetsky Sport daily said Hiddink's options were in fact more limited and that he would be returning to the Dutch Eredivisie if he failed to agree to terms with Anzhi.

"The number (of offers) mentioned by Nieuwenhuizen are not true," the paper wrote quoting unnamed sources.
The report said that Anzhi would announce Russia's second squad coach Yury Krasnozhan as its new manager later on Thursday. Hiddink had also been linked with the post.

"It is possible that Hiddink will be consultant or technical director," it said.
Anzhi had little success in Russian football until being acquired by the Suleyman Kerimov this year and going on a spending spree that landed them Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto'o and Brazilian veteran Roberto Carlos.
The team qualified for the second stage of the Russian Premier League and currently sit in seventh place and five points off a European league qualifying spot.

City, Man United scrap over FA Cup tickets

Manchester United have complained to the English Football Association (FA) over their allocation of tickets for next month's eagerly awaited FA Cup clash with Manchester City, reports said on Tuesday.

FA rules state that visiting teams are entitled to a ticket allocation equivalent to 15 percent of capacity, which would give United 7 100 tickets to the January 8 showdown at Eastlands.

City, however, have only offered United 5 500 tickets – 11 percent of capacity – citing safety reasons.

Local media reports said that the issue came to light during discussions about ticket arrangements for a possible replay, when City learned they would only receive 8 500 tickets – 11 percent – for any return match at Old Trafford.

United enjoy a special dispensation from the FA rules because Old Trafford's 76 000 capacity is far greater than any other club in England.

The spat is likely to heighten anticipation surrounding the third-round clash, which comes with City and United locked in a neck-and-neck league title race.

United are also determined to avenge their 6-1 humiliation by City at Old Trafford earlier this season.

Fans protest Eto’o’s ban

Local football fans have taken to the streets to protest the ban on national team captain, Samuel Eto’o.

Irate fans moved from Mutengene to Tiko (20kms distance) two towns in the Southwest Region of Cameroon.

They marched in the streets demanding that the fifteen-match ban on the four-time African Player of the Year be reversed.
Meantime, SuperSport.com learnt that fans in the capital city Yaoundé and Douala may be spoiling for protest if nothing is done to lift the sanction.

Much anger has been shown in the Eto’o sanction considering that football is the one thing Cameroonians are passionate about. Locals also hold Eto’o very dear and follow him in his exploits from one club to another.

It is apparently against this background of anger and anticipated riots that newly sports and physical education minister, Adoum Garoua issued a press release on Tuesday morning calling for calm. He said government was studying the matter and a solution would be sought.

It is likely that the Minister will exploit the provision of the Fecafoot rules and regulations stipulating that the president of the federation or the sports minister can overturn any decision of the disciplinary committee.

Eto'o's communication outfit has prepared a live TV broadcast tonight where he is supposed to spill the beans.

The Adidas match ball had a blowout during Bayern-Cologne..Video highlight

While the world is still trying to recover from the horribleness of the Jabulani, the last thing Adidas needed was another ball embarrassment, especially on the heels of their Euro 2012 ball announcement. But, when Daniel van Buyten took an innocent free kick during Bayern Munich's 3-0 win over Cologne and the Torfabrik II ball was deflected by a sliding defender, its insides popped out.

Suddenly looking like some kind of science project, everyone seemed a bit confused by it. Arjen Robben carefully picked it up, gave it a look and then booted it into the stands as the crowd cheered his treatment of the faulty ball.

Here's video...
